The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has declared he is withdrawing from the race for Ireland's head of state right away.

He was set to be among three contenders standing for Ireland's head of state, beside TD Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

Nonetheless, Sunday night he announced via a statement that he "committed an error inconsistent with his values and his personal standards."

"After weighing these points, I've resolved to withdraw from the election for president with immediate effect and return to the arms of my family," he said in his announcement.

Further updates expected.
